Your vinyl pool is dropping water. A neighbor says "just replace the liner." A big-box patch kit says "fix it yourself." Both can be wrong - and expensive - if you have not found the leak yet.
At The Leak Geeks we start with detection, then decide. Many vinyl pools need a patch or a fitting repair, not a full liner. When a liner truly is finished, we say so and connect you with a trusted replacement partner. We do not do full liner replacements in-house.
Step one: find the leak before you buy a liner
Water loss can come from:
- A tear, pinhole, or seam in the liner
- A fitting sealed to the liner (return, light, skimmer faceplate, main drain cover area)
- Underground plumbing between the pool and the equipment pad
Replacing the liner does nothing for a plumbing leak. Digging for a pipe does nothing for a pinhole behind a step. Professional leak detection (pressure testing, dye testing, electronic listening) pinpoints the source with the pool still full so you pay for the right fix.

When a patch (or fitting repair) is usually enough
A patch or localized repair is often the right call when:
- You have one or a few clear tears or pinholes in otherwise sound vinyl
- A gasket or faceplate at a skimmer, light, or return is leaking
- The liner is still flexible, well seated in the track, and not full of wrinkles or brittle age cracks
- The leak stops at a known water level that matches a fitting or visible damage
Our leak patches and repairs carry a 1-year warranty. We focus on leaks and pool plumbing - not pumps, filters, or heaters.
When replacement is the smarter path
Full replacement through a partner makes more sense when:
- The liner is old, brittle, or heavily wrinkled and tearing in multiple places
- It has pulled out of the track along long stretches
- Fading, staining, or prior patches cover so much of the wall that another patch is a band-aid
- Detection shows the shell side is sound and the liner itself is the widespread problem
We will tell you straight if that is the case and coordinate the replacement with a trusted liner partner rather than stretch a patch that will not hold.
Clues from a simple bucket test
- Set a bucket on a pool step; match the water level inside to the pool; mark both.
- Turn off auto-fill. Check after 24 hours.
- If the pool drops faster than the bucket, you likely have a leak.
- Repeat with the pump off. A change in loss rate can point toward pressure-side plumbing, suction-side plumbing, or the liner - clues for the technician, not a final diagnosis.
How a typical Leak Geeks vinyl visit goes
- Confirm loss (bucket test / history).
- Inspect liner, fittings, and equipment pad.
- Use dye, pressure tests, and listening gear as needed.
- Patch or repair what we find, or map a plumbing leak for repair (including PipePoxy no-dig lining when the problem is the underground line).
- If the liner is past saving, introduce the replacement partner.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a vinyl liner patch last?
It depends on the liner's age and condition and where the damage is. A patch on otherwise sound, flexible vinyl holds far better than one on brittle, aging vinyl. Our leak patches and repairs carry a 1-year warranty.
Do you replace vinyl liners?
No. We do not do full liner replacements in-house. We find the leak first, patch or repair it when that makes sense, and when a liner is truly finished we say so and refer you to a trusted liner replacement partner.
Should I drain the pool to find a liner leak?
No. Professional leak detection (pressure testing, dye testing, electronic listening) pinpoints the source with the pool still full, so you pay for the right fix.
